954,777. Monitoring reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 29, 1963 [April 10, 1962], No. 12658/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel element is provided at each end with a pair of electrical contacts for transmitting a potential difference, e.g. a thermocouple output, to the next fuel element, one of the contacts being a central stud mounted on an end plug and the other being mounted on the upper edge of a resilient cup, and the pair of contacts are connected together by sheathed electric conductors extending along the length of the fuel element. Fig. 2 shows part of the adjacent ends of two fuel elements which are enclosed in cans 20 sealed by end plugs 21. A metal support 24 is screwed or rivetted to the end plug 21 and the central contact 25 is secured to the support 24 by a screw 26. The outer contact 27 is rivetted to a flexible cup 28 which bears on the support 24 by means of a tubular casing 30 screwed to the support, ceramic spacing members 31 and 32 providing the necessary insulation. The contacts 25 and 27 are connected to the corresponding contacts on the other end of the fuel element of conductors 33 and 34 which are disposed within an insulating sheath 35 secured to a supporting lug (not shown) mounted between cooling pins on the can 20. The fuel elements may be provided with centring means 39,40 for aligning adjacent elements. Specification 954,776 is referred to.
