In a rotary pump particularly for pumping hot liquids and comprising an impeller 1 driven by a shaft 12 which is sealed by a stuffing-box 7 in a housing 5 and supported in bearings 13, 14 carried in a housing 8 having a lubricant sump 11, the stuffing-box 7 and the bearings are cooled by air circulated by an air impeller 22 fixed to the shaft. The interior space 21 of the housing 5 is connected by a conduit 25 with a passage 26 under the sump 11 containing cooling fins 33 and closed, except for an aperture 32, by a cover 31. In operation, cooling air is drawn in by the impeller 22 through the aperture 32 to the space 21 and discharged to the atmosphere through an aperture 24, Fig. 2. Packing rings 16 are compressed in the box 7 by a gland 18 set by bolts 19 access to which for adjustment is provided through windows 35 normally closed by plates 36.
