A method of making blade and handle carrying members for spades, forks and similar tools comprises forming a pair of such members from a single length of metal stock of rectangular cross-section one of said members being forged at one end of said length and the other member being forged at the other end thereof so that said members are joined together by a solid portion which is subsequently divided medially of its length to provide two separate blade and handle carrying members each having a solid end for securement to a blade of the tool. Oppositely disposed depressions 16, Fig. 2, are forged in a single length of metal stock of rectangular crosssection. One end of the stock is then rolled to fishtail shape and trimmed, Fig. 4, by punch and die apparatus. The fishtail is then formed into a socket, Fig. 5, by forging around a tapered former and a short length of a seam thus formed is welded. A socket is then similarly formed at the other end of the workpiece. The solid middle portion of the workpiece joining the sockets is then forged in round cross-section, then bent, Fig. 9, and divided transversely by sawing. The solid ends of the finished members are then welded to blades 10, Fig. 1, and handles 12 are secured in their socketed ends. The blades 10 may be forged or cast and formed with a short butt to which the member is welded. The dividing sawcut may be inclined rather than perpendicular to the axis of the solid middle portion.
