Abstract
535,229. Making screw propellers. HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, Ltd., and HERON, J. A. Oct. 23, 1939, No. 28486. [Class 83 (ii)] A hollow air screw or propeller blade is made by shaping one or two blanks of aluminium, magnesium or their alloys or other metal so that the edges thereof are juxtaposed at or near what will be the edges of the finished blade, welding the juxtaposed edges, and then forging the weld. Two blanks 1, 2 of light metal or alloy, produced by stamping, extrusion &c. are welded by fusion at the edges 3 .. 6, which may be rebated together and chamfered to receive the weld material, and the joints are then rolled or swaged to make the metal homogeneous, work out the added metal and give the desired form to the blade edge. The excess metal, including the whole or part of the added weld metal 78, Fig. 3, may be removed by machining or other wise. The root and tip of the blade may be formed integral with either blank or partly with each. In a modification a single blank is forged to form root 20, Figs. 7, 8, tip 29, and two connecting parts 21, 22, themselves joined by a bend 23 which forms one edge of the blade. This blank is pressed so that the edges 24, 25 touch. These edges are then welded, worked and machined as before. The cavity 9 may include a skeleton reinforcement which may be welded in situ.
