In a proportioning and mixing apparatus for the production of plastics (especially polyurethane foams) a motor 9 drives metering pumps 8, 19 which supply the two main components to the mixing chamber 13 where they are mixed by counter-current injection. One of the components is obtained from the container 1, and the other is composed of two partial components from the containers 22, 23 which are pre-mixed by the stirring device 21; the supplementary metering pump 20 (which draws the partial component from container 23) and the stirring device 21 are also driven from the motor 9. The pumps 8, 19, 20 have relief valves 17a, 17b, 17c controlled through the means for switching off the pumps and matched so that irrespective of variation in the high delivery pressures for the respective components they decrease at the end of a mixing period in such a way that cessation of feed for all takes place at the same time.
