Abstract

957,413. Mulling shoe uppers. FORMULAST CORPORATION. May 12, 1960 [Sept. 3, 1959], No. 16878/60. Heading A3B. A leather upper is mulled in an atmosphere having a temperature above 130‹F., preferably between 140‹F. and 180‹F., and 100% relative humidity for a restricted time, e.g. 3 minutes, so that the moisture content is at a greater concentration at at least one surface than it is in the upper as a whole. Preferably the time is such that the moisture content at at least one surface is not less than 18%. A fine hot water mist spray may be directed on to the leather during mulling. As shown the uppers 58 are carried by a conveyer 36 through an open ended chamber 10 containing a hot water trough 22 with perforated steam pipes 24 for bubbling steam through the water to produce the required atmosphere. The uppers are removed via the shoot 50. A plurality of nozzles 54 produce a fine mist of hot water which falls on to the upper, grain, surface of the upper. The conveyer may be part of an endless conveyer leading to successive lasting stations, and may carry last supports. Specification 933,183 is referred to.
