Abstract
1,081,613. Boots and shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., K. LEE and F. R. SMITH. Feb. 6, 1964 [Feb. 9, 1963], No. 5373/63. Heading A3B. A lasted upper S on a last 10 is set by being passed bottom downwards through a first chamber 4 having a humid atmosphere at a temperature of 47-53‹C. at the base of the last and 58-70‹C. one inch above the base, and then through a second chamber 6 in which hot dry air is directed on to the upper. Preferably the second temperature range is 58-62‹C. As shown the lasts are carried on a conveyer 8 by shoe supports comprising nylon covered wire mesh platforms 18 and polyurethane foam members 22 which by engagement with curtains 26, 28, 30 separate and seal chambers 4 and 6. Vapour from the thermostatically controlled boiler 42 and air from adjustable damper 46 pass via chimney 40 and inlet 34 into chamber 4. The drying air is circulated by fan 60 through ducts 62, where it is heated, to chamber 58, and thence through nozzles 54 on to the shoes in chamber 6. Air leaves nozzles 54 at a temperature of 100-130‹C. and velocity of about 75 feet per second. The conveyer may be run at any one of three speeds whereby the shoes spend in chambers 4 and 6 respectively, 75 secs. and 104 secs., 58 secs. and 80 secs., or 110 secs. and 152 secs.
