Abstract
Nickel and zinc dithiophosphate diesters for use in lubricating oil compositions contain as the organic groups in the esters aryl, alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl groups of 4-20 carbon atoms. In examples, nickel di-2-ethylhexyl dithiophosphate is prepared by reacting nickel carbonate with di-2-ethylhexyl dithiophosphoric acid and a zinc compound is prepared by reacting zinc oxide with the reaction product of phosphorus pentasulphide with a technical mixture of C7 secondary and C6 primary alcohols. Other specified hydroxy compounds from which the dithiophosphate esters may be derived are 2-methylamyl alcohol, 4-methylpentanol-2, 2-methylpentanol-1, di-isopropyl carbinol, cyclohexanol, butanol-1, octadecanol-1, di-octyl phenol and triisobutyl phenol.ALSO:Mineral oil base lubricants contain zinc and nickel dithiophosphate diesters, each present in an amount to provide 0.03-0.2% by weight of phosphorus. The oil may have a viscosity of 35-225 S.U.S. at 210 DEG F. and may be derived from paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic or mixed base crudes. The organic groups in the diesters may each be a C4-C20 aryl, alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl group, e.g. derived from the hydroxyl compounds 2-methylamyl alcohol, 4 - methylpentanol - 2, 2 - methylpentanol - 1, 2-ethylhexanol, butanol-1, octadecanol-1, lauryl alcohol, dioctyl phenol or tri-isobutyl phenol. Preferred diesters are nickel di-2-ethylhexyl dithiophosphate and the zinc salt of a diester obtained by reacting phosphorus pentasulphide with a technical mixture of C6 and C7 alcohols. Optional ingredients are detergents, e.g. 0.5-10% of basic barium or calcium mahogany sulphonate, barium amyl phenol sulphide, calcium cetyl phenate or basic calcium octyl salicylate, and an anti-wear agent, e.g. sulphurized sperm oil, rape seed oil, cotton seed oil, or palm oil containing 5-15% of combined sulphur by weight and added to give a sulphur content to the oil of 0.06-0.2%.
