Abstract

956,532. Road vehicle suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 24, 1962 [Sept. 13, 1961], No. 32666/62. Heading B7D. In a motor vehicle suspension there is provided spring means operative in a longitudinal direction and having two stages of resistance. As shown, the suspension comprises pivot arms 13 and 14 and a wheel supporting spindle 17. The inboard pivot 18 for the arm 14 comprises a resilient bush affording lateral pivoting movement of the arm 14 opposed by a strut 23 rigidly connected to the arm 14 and having a resilient connection, Fig. 2, to a bracket 24 carried by the vehicle body or frame. The bracket 24 has two load-bearing flanges 35 through which the strut 23 passes, lateral forces being transmitted through a nut 29, shoulder 27, washers 28 and 32, and a pair of resilient pucks 25, 26 which are not preloaded. A resilient puck 33 of low rate is positioned above the bracket 24 and a flexible cable 34 is secured to a ball 37 bearing upon a plate 38 and a threaded cylindrical member 39, by means of a nut 41 upon which the puck 33 is preloaded, the cable 34 passing through a chamfered hole 36 in the strut 23. Light lateral loads on the suspension are cushioned by the puck 33, the strut 23 acting through the cable 34. Heavier loads due to braking are cushioned by the pucks 25 and 26.
