Abstract

956,487. Steam power plant. BALFOUR, BEATTY & CO. Ltd. Sept. 3, 1962 [Sept. 8, 1961], No. 32350/61. Heading F1Q. [Also in Division F4] In an electrical power station having an electrical generator driven by a condensing steam engine which is supplied with steam from a boiler and the exhaust steam from which is condensed by means including a cooling tower 1, the boiler is situated within the cooling tower. As shown the turbine room 13 having turbo-generators 14 within it is also located within the cooling tower. The boiler has a main outer casing 7 which contains a furnace space 8 forced and induced draught fans 9 and a precipitator 10. At the bottom of the casing 7 is a coal bunker 11. The switch gear is connected with transformers 19 which are housed outside the bottom of the cooling tower. A control room 15 contains switch gear 16 and other auxiliary machinery such as cooling water pumps 17 and low and high pressure heaters 18. In a complete power station layout illustrated diagramatically in Fig. 4 (not shown) there are six cooling towers containing boilers and turbo-generator sets. The Specification refers to wet cooling towers, dry cooling towers and an arrangement comprising large radiators which form the condenser situated within the cooling tower. The invention is applicable to power stations in which the boiler is heated by solid, oil or gas fuel. It is also applicable to power stations in which the boiler is heated by a nuclear reactor.
