Abstract
A petroleum resin having a particular colour and softening point and made by polymerizing a steam-cracked hydrocarbon stream containing monomeric and dimeric cyclodienes, is prepared by adjusting the ratio of monomeric cyclodienes to dimeric cyclodienes before polymerization by soaking the hydrocarbon stream at a predetermined temperature for a sufficient time to attain the desired ratio between the monomeric and dimeric cyclodienes at that temperature, whereby a resin of the desired colour and softening point is obtained by subsequent polymerization. The hydrocarbon stream may be a steam-cracked naphtha containing from 4 to 5% cyclodienes and the ratio of monomeric to dimeric cyclodienes is adjusted to provide at least 1.5% of monomeric cyclodienes, based on the naphtha, whereby a resin having a colour between 12 and 13 Gardner units and a softening point between 95 DEG and 105 DEG C is obtained by subsequent polymerization. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
