Abstract
956,145. Cutting apparatus. PORTALS Ltd., A. J. TOOTH, and D. WALMSLEY. Aug. 17, 1960 [Sept. 8, 1959], No. 30669/59. Heading B4B. [Also in Division B6] Stacked sheets, which may have been cut from a web, are each formed in one edge with a notch. If one sheet, e.g. sheet 11, be wrongly orientated in the stack, it will interrupt a photo-electric beam to operate a warning device 14 or prevent operation of a guillotine for subdividing the sheets. A water-marked web is notched, cut into sheets and these, after various operations involving stacking and unstacking, are printed in register with the watermarks. Alternatively a web may be printed and cut transversely into sheets each of which is also notched at the same time and then the sheets are subjected to stacking and unstacking operations prior to guillotining in register with the printing. Cutting webs transversely (Fig. 3).-The web 23 is forwarded from a supply roll over guide rolls 21, 22 to a cutter by driven rolls 24, 25, the nip pressure of which is adjustable. The cutter comprises a fixed knife 33 and a revolving knife 32 carried on a driven drum 36. To vary the length of sheet drum 36 is driven through a variable-speed drive. Notching the edge of sheets or webs (Fig. 4).-In the case of sheets, the notching device is synchronized with the sheet feed. In the case of webs, the notching device is located between the guide rolls 21, 22 (Fig. 3), and is driven in synchronism with the transverse cutting knife 32. The web passes between discs 41, 56 rotating with shaft 42 in synchronism with cutter 32. The edge of web 59 overlies a U-shaped radiallyadjustable cutter 43 on disc 41, with which cooperates a cutter 45 pivoted about an axis 47 and normally held in raised inoperative position by a stationary cam 51. When the discs have rotated to bring the knives to the correct position, the cam 51 allows knife 45 to drop through an aperture in disc 56 under the influence of springs 50 to cut a notch, the waste falling into collector tube 55. The effective circular path of the knives equals the sheet length so that the speeds of the knives and paper during cutting are equal. To vary the position of the notch along the sheet edge, the shaft 42 and the shaft of knife drum 36 are in axial alignment and terminate in flanges which are bolted together; the flanges can be unbolted and bolted up again in a different relative position thus changing the position of the notch relative to the transverse cut.
