A composition, having less than 5% by weight of hydrocarbon solvent, for simultaneously cleaning and polishing, e.g. an automobile surface, when added to water, comprises water as a continuous phase, 0.1 to 10 parts of a wax and 0.05 to 10 parts of an organopolysiloxane in a discontinuous phase dispersed in said water, and 0.01 to 60 parts of a cleaning detergent dissolved in said water, the water being present in at least sufficient quantity to produce a stable dispersion of said dispersed materials, said parts being by weight. The composition may comprise 0.05 to 5 parts of a solvent and/or dispersant in which the siloxane is miscible and the wax is dissolved or dispersed. The wax may be microcrystalline wax, oxidized microcrystalline wax, polyethylene, oxidized polyethylene, carnauba, beeswax, a wax made from hydrogenating hydrocarbon oil, montan wax, Fischer-Tropsch wax, oxidized Fischer-Tropsch wax, candelilla, wool wax and ouricury. The polysiloxanes mentioned are polydimethyl-, polydiethyl-, poly(phenyl-methyl)-, poly (phenyl-ethyl)-, poly (methyl-vinyl)-, poly (ethyl-vinyl)-, siloxanes and mixtures thereof. The solvent and/or dispersant may be pale paraffin oil, mineral spirits, naphtha, toluene, xylene, hexane, octane, carbon tetrachloride, methyl chloroform and trichlorotrifluoroethane. The detergent may be anionic (e.g. sodium alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, triethanolamine alkyl benzene sulphonate, sodium alkyl aryl polyether sulphate and sodium alkyl sulphosuccinate) non ionic (e.g. a condensate of polyethylene glycol with tertiary dodecyl thioether, nonyl phenol polyglycol ether, trimethyl nonyl polyglycol ether, and fatty acid alkanolamide), cationic (e.g. ethanolated alkyl guanidineamine complex) or amphoteric (e.g. Miranol C2M having the formula: <FORM:0955975/C3/1> Other components which may be added, include carboxymethylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, butyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) and diatomaceous earth.
