Abstract

A polishing composition, e.g. for automobiles and other smooth surfaces, comprises a wax dispersed in a volatile petroleum hydrocarbon solvent, together with a water-insoluble metallic soap and a liquid alkylpolysiloxane having at least two alkyl groups per silicon atom. The wax may be a microcrystalline hydrocarbon wax, beeswax, or other wax. Alternatively, the wax may be replaced wholly or partly by an ethylene/methyl propionate telomer. Preferably the proportion by weight of polysiloxane to total film-forming constituents (wax, siloxane and soap) is between 1 : 2.0 and 1 : 2.5. A finely-divided solid may be included in the compositions to increase the visibility of the film on application. The compositions may be applied by spray. Eleven examples are given. A preferred composition (example 10) is: beeswax 0.9; microcrystalline hydrocarbon wax 1.5; magnesium oxide 1.5; polysiloxane 3.6; aluminium stearate 1.2; petroleum naphtha boiling range 140-200 DEG C. 91.3; all parts by weight. The composition may be prepared by dispersing the soap in the major portion of the naphtha with heating to 160-175 DEG F. followed by agitation. The magnesium oxide is then added and the mixture cooled to 70-80 DEG F. The waxes are melted together, the rest of the naphtha added and the dispersion added to the soap dispersion followed by the siloxane. The final mixture is agitated for at least ten minutes.
