Nails (which may have unsharpened points and heads no larger than the shanks), or spikes, brads or pins, are joined side-by-side in a strip, by brazing or spot-welding to at least two lengths 16, 18, Fig. 3, of flat or round soft steel wire, for use in a nailing machine. The driving member of the machine breaks the wires and the fragments remaining on each nail, Fig. 7, serve to anchor the driven nail. The wires may be coined, Fig. 2 (not shown), to form weak zones between the nails but they need not be parallel nor off the facets of the points. The strips may be rolled, with the heads in each convolution overlapping those of an adjacent convolution ; the inner heads may be above the outer, Fig. 3, or vice versa, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The joining wires may be bent, Fig. 6, so that the heads overlap along the strip, with the shanks remaining parallel, Fig. 8 (not shown), or converging as shown. In the latter case the strip may be so long as to overlap itself in two or more layers of a spiral.
