Abstract
955,388. Drilling machine details. SOAG MACHINE TOOLS Ltd. June 27, 1960 [July 21, 1959], No. 25022/59. Heading B3C. In a machine for drilling paper &c. the worktable is moved past the drill head in a step-bystep manner, such movement being controlled by the movement of the head towards and away from the table. The machine comprises a base 1, Fig. 1, a horizontally movable table 2, and a vertically movable drill head 3. A rack 13, Fig. 2, carried by a spring-urged, air buffered slide 14 secured to the head, is moved by a pinion 12 secured to a shaft 9, the latter being driven by a motor 5, through a toothed belt 7, and a toothed pulley 8. An electromagnetic clutch 10, 11 connects the pulley 8 to the shaft and the clutch is disengaged by a microswitch operated by an adjustable knob 15 on the slide which engages a button 16, when the slide is in its lowermost position. A chainwheel 19 on the shaft drives a chain 20 and a sprocket 21, the latter having a striker 22 which engages a lever 23, Fig. 3, connected to a spring-urged desent 28, which engages a rack 30 on the table 2 to control the step-by-step movement of the table. A spring-urged latch 32 also engages the rack 30, actuates a second mircoswitch 35 for re-engaging the clutch during automatic operation. In operation, the clutch is engaged, and the head is moved towards the table 2 by rotation of shaft 9, until the knob 15 strikes the button 16 and disengages the clutch, thus stopping the downward movements of the drill head. The head is moved upwardly by springs 17, and the striker 22 engages lever 23 carried by a pin 25, and a second spring-urged lever 24 secured to the pin engages a member 27 secured to the detent 28. The latter is moved against a spring 31, out of engagement with the rack 30, and the table is moved to the left until the detent is spring-urged into the next tooth on the rack. For automatic operation to drill a series of holes, the latch 32 engages a tooth in the rack 30, and when the table is moved to the left, the latch is pulled along with it, the switch 35 is actuated and re-engages the clutch, and a pin 33 on the latch rides up a cam 37, is disengaged from the rack, returns to its original position in engagement with a different tooth, and the work cycle is repeated. The voltage in the coil of the clutch is varied by means of a rheostat, thus controlling the supply torque to suit the particular drill being used.
