Abstract

A liquid food for calves, suitable as a substitute for fresh milk, is produced by mixing skim-milk or skim-milk powder and water with, as additives, up to 1.0% by weight (calculated on the total weight of skim-milk plus additives or skim-milk powder plus water plus additives, as the case may be) of one or more of linolic, linolenic and arachidonic acids or derivatives of these acids such as the glycerides, phosphatides and esters, or a fat or oil which contains at least 30% by weight of at least one of the fatty acids or derivatives, the additives being present in sufficient amount to provide at least 0.04% by weight of fatty acid (calculated as pure fatty acid). The fat or oil employed, which preferably retains its fluid form at a temperature of 15 DEG C., may be added as droplets coated with a layer of gelatine or wax. The liquid food may include one antioxidant for the fatty acid such as butoxy toluene, an emulsifier such as lecithin or the monoglyceride of stearic acid, propronic acid (for expediting the forming of cuds in the rumen of the animal), vitamins and antibiotics. Oils mentioned: hemp-seed, linseed, soya, sun-flower, sesame, cottonseed, corn, rice and ground nut oils, and oil of wheat grain. Examples are given.
