Abstract

A plastic composition comprises 100 parts by weight of a thermosetting resin, with not less than 150 parts of calcium carbonate or glass or porcelain powder of particle size less than 150 mesh and not less than 500 parts of iron sand with particles which will pass a 50 mesh sieve and be retained by a 100 mesh sieve. The composition may also include not less than 200 parts of river sand. Small pebbles may also be added. Suitable thermosetting resins are unsaturated polyesters, epoxy rubber-styrene or phenol-formaldehyde. Examples 1-5 use a styrene-unsaturated polyester resin (the polyester being prepared from ethylene glycol, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride) with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide as catalyst, dimethyl phthalate as plasticiser and cobalt naphthenate as accelerator. The fillers were calcium carbonate and iron sand, with pebbles in addition in Example 4, and pebbles and river sand in Example 5. In Example 6 the resin was an epoxy one from bisphenol A and epichlorhydrin with triethylene tetramine as hardener and calcium carbonate and iron sand as fillers. The compositions are useful for structural and ornamental purposes.
