Abstract

Direct dyeing black dyestuffs are made by subjecting a slurry of dibenzanthrone, isodibenzanthrone or a halogen substituted derivative thereof in sulphuric acid of about 40% to 65% of concentration to treatment with about 20 to 65 parts of mixed nitration acid for each 45 parts of the said starting compound. The mixed nitration acid consists of about one third nitric acid and two thirds sulphuric acid. Examples are given.
