Abstract
In a process for producing a combustible gas of low carbon monoxide content solid fuels are gasified at elevated pressure with a mixture of oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and steam and/or carbon dioxide and the gas produced is cooled and purified and then saturated with steam, reheated and reacted in the presence of a catalyst to convert some of the carbon monoxide with steam to carbon dioxide and hydrogen, the steam for the conversion being supplied by water circulating in a system comprising a saturator in which the gas to be converted is contacted with heated circulating water, a spray cooler and one or more indirect heat exchangers in which water from the saturator is partly reheated by heat from the converted gas and an indirect heat exchanger in which the circulating water is finally reheated before return to the saturator by the crude gas. Heat for the conversion is supplied by heat exchange with the converted gas. The hot crude gas is first passed through a washer-cooler before entering the indirect heat exchanger in the water circulating system. The partially cooled crude gas after leaving the indirect heat exchanger is passed successively through a waste heat boiler, a regenerator regenerating potassium carbonate solution used to remove carbon dioxide from the converted gas, coolers, an oil washer and a washer in which hydrogen sulphide is removed before entering the saturator in which it is saturated with steam for the conversion. The surfaces of the indirect heat exchanger in contact with the crude gas may be continuously or intermittently flushed with condensate condensed from the crude gas. In an example after scrubbing the converted gas to remove carbon dioxide the resultant gas had the composition: CO2 3.0%; CnHm 0.8%; Co 7.7%; H2 74.0%; CH4 13.1%; N2 1.4%.
