Abstract
954,798. Servicing reactors. A.E.I. -JOHN THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. July 18, 1961 [July 12, 1960], No. 24301/60. Heading G6C. Handling apparatus for broken fuel element fragments including a television camera 1, Fig. 1, supporting a pair of tongs 2 as disclosed in Specification 879,5 28, the tongs being mounted for movement about vertical axes on a block 3 having a pair of parallel flanges 4 whereby the block may be secured beneath the camera by a sliding movement in a horizontal plane, is provided with transfer apparatus to permit, by remote control, the removal of a block 3 and its replacement by another block having tongs of a different size. The transfer apparatus, as described, is intended for use with a modified block 3<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, having a pair of parallel flanges 13, a spring pressed pin 15 locking the block to a member 5<SP>1</SP> after it has been slid into position therein. The block 3' also has an opening 16 for engagement by the transfer apparatus. The transfer apparatus, Figs. 5, 6, 9, comprises a casing 17 housing a magazine 18 rotatable by a motor 20 through gearing 19, the magazine having a number of storage positions each consisting of a pair of tracks 26 on which the alternative tong-carrying blocks 21 are mounted. The handling apparatus 1 is centred above the magazine by pawls 24 and the magazine rotated to align the reflected block 21 with a radially extending track 22 whereby the block 21 may be moved by a carriage 25 from the tracks 26 to the track 22 andthence on the member 5'. The carriage 25 is moved by rotating a rod 27 having a threaded engagement with the carriage, the carriage being coupled to a block by a probe 28 entering the opening 16, this probe being rotatable by a shaft 30 so that lugs 29 thereon, Fig. 9, enter recesses 16a. The entrance of the probe also withdraws the pin 15 through a bell-crank linkage system 43,45, 46. The pawls 24 are controlled by a further shaft 38 acting through gearing 41,42.
