Abstract

A prefabricated granular fertilizer comprises at least one water-soluble plant nutrient, the granules of which are coated with a plurality of coatings, one of which serves as a primer coating and another of which is a water-resistant film forming a water-resistant composite encapsulating the said primer coated granules in a tack-free coating under normal handling conditions. The primer coatings which preferably constitute 1 to 3% by weight of the fertilizer may be a styrenated soya alkyl resin, a urea formaldehyde resin, boiled linseed oil containing lead, manganese, or calcium driers, and phenol formaldehyde resins. The film forming coatings may be prepared from linseed, oiticica, tung, or heat treated or blown oils; synthetic oils made from butadiene or butylene with styrene, dicyclopentadiene or butadiene; silicone alkyds; copolymer alkyds of dicyclopentadiene, styrene, and acrylates; esters of rosin, glycerol and pentacrythritol; maleic resins; coumarone indene resins; terpene resins; petroleum resins; latices of polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylate, polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinyl acetate and copolymers; melamine formaldehyde; nitro-cellulose, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, condensation products of fatty dimers and trimers of acids with diamines; condensation products of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol polyesters of glycols; polysiloxene; petroleum and coal tar pitches and asphalts; natural and synthetic waxes which may be derived from behenyl behenate, fatty keto esters, dodecyl allophanate, triglycerides of hydroxy stearate or hydrogenated castor oil, polyvinyl stearate and high melting polyethylene. These coatings may be added to known fertilizers containing carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulphur, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, chlorine and trace elements.
