Abstract

954,541. Lace-machines. LACE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Aug. 4, 1960 [Aug.14, 1959], No. 27811/59. Heading D1C. Yarns 1 being wound on to rotated lace machine bobbins 8, run under and drive a drum 5 against a torque imposed by an electromagnetic brake 12-14. The brake consists of a plate 12 rotating with the drum, a fixed plate 13, a magnetisable powder between the plates and diametrically disposed polepieces 14 of an electromagmet. The bobbins are threaded on a spindle 9 driven by a motor 16, which also drives a lead screw 18, through a reduction gear 17. To vary the yarn tension as winding proceeds, a rheostat varying the magnet current is operated by a pinion 25 and rack 24, moved by a cam 26 carried by a slide 21 advanced by the lead screw, through a half nut 19. A motor starting foot pedal may be connected to a cable 34 so that, on the start of a winding operation, a guide block 30, secured to the half nut, is swung about a pivot 38, to disengage the half nut from the lead screw, whereupon the slide is returned to its starting position by a spring 22. The cam 26, which is secured to the slide 21 by a pin 27 at one end of the cam and by a screw 28 and slot connection at the other end, may be so profiled as to provide for an initial period of comparatively high tension, reduced subsequently. A subsidiary circuit automatically provides for a selected amount of braking torque for "dropping-in". The closing bars of sleys 6, 7 may be of material not capable of collecting an eleetrostafic charge.
