Abstract

954,392. Mixing appliances. G. C. MITCHELL, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Oct. 12, 1962 [Oct. 25, 1961], No. 38157/61. Heading B1C. [Also in Division F1] A method of delivering from a centrifugal pump a liquid containing solids which are of such a nature as to float on the surface of the liquid comprises the steps of causing the liquid to move in a vortex by imparting at the inlet of the pump a swirling motion additional to that imparted to it by the rotation of the pump impeller, and adding the solids to the centre of the vortex so as to be sucked thereby into the pump in which they form an intimate mixture with the liquid. The inlet 1 of a centrifugal pump is extended to form a conical funnel 3. Liquid under pressure is fed into the funnel from a pipe 11 which is inclined so as to impart a swirling motion to the liquid whereby a vortex 7 is formed. Particles, e.g. of tobacco, fall from a dispenser 8 at a substantially uniform rate into the centre of the vortex 7 which sucks them into the pump. The pump discharges to a reservoir 6. If air is drawn into the pump through the vortex, thereby causing cessation of pumping, the liquid in the pump will rise into the funnel under the influence of the discharge head in the reservoir 6, whereby the air leak is sealed off and the pump is reprimed.
