Abstract

965,706. Separating solids by froth flotation; agitating slurries ; aerating liquids. HEYL & PATTERSON Inc. Nov. 13, 1961, No. 40583/61. Headings B1C and B2H. In a froth flotation process or apparatus for carrying out such a process liquid 7 is impelled through a pipe 2 into slurry 5 below the surface 6 thereof and released to spread out into the slurry 5 and a gas is delivered through the vortex, unmixed with the liquid 7, where such liquid 7 is released into the slurry and the gas is broken up into fine bubbles 10 which rise through the slurry 5 and pick up particles to form froth. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, pulp 5<SP>1</SP> is contained within a receptacle 4<SP>1</SP> provided with a conical bottom 4<SP>11</SP>. Liquid is introduced tangentially into a chamber 11<SP>1</SP> through an inlet 12<SP>1</SP> and gas under pressure is introduced into the chamber 11<SP>1</SP> through a pipe 13<SP>1</SP>. The gas and liquid then pass from the chamber 11<SP>1</SP> down a pipe 3<SP>1</SP> into the pulp 5<SP>1</SP> to form fine bubbles 10<SP>1</SP> which attach themselves to particles in the pulp 5<SP>1</SP> to form a froth 14 which overflows into a trough 16. Part of the pulp 5<SP>1</SP> may be recirculated through a pipe 17, pump 18, pipe 19, inlet 12<SP>1</SP> and chamber 11<SP>1</SP>. Liquid or pulp 5<SP>1</SP> may be supplied to the receptacle 4<SP>1</SP> at 20 and tailings may be discharged through a pipe 21. Gas may be introduced into the chamber 11<SP>1</SP> with the liquid through the tangential inlet 12<SP>1</SP> and separated from the liquid within the chamber 11<SP>1</SP> due to a swirling or centrifugal action. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), gas is introduced through a pipe projecting upwardly into a vortex cavity formed by the liquid 7 issuing from the bottom of the pipe 2 shown in Fig. 1.
