Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials are treated in either order with an aqueous caustic solution and with the hot vapour of an epihalohydrin or material which liberates an epihalohydrin when in an alkaline medium. The textile materials may be impregnated with a solution containing 1-25% by weight of sodium or potassium hydroxide by dipping, spraying or padding to a liquid uptake of 40-100% by weight at a temperature from ambient temperature to 80 DEG C. The caustic solution may contain 0.1-25% by weight of a cationic, anionic or nonionic wetting agent, e.g. sodium or potassium myristate, laurate, palmitate, oleate or stearate, ammonium stearate, lauryl amine hydrochloride and stearyl amine hydrochloride. The textile materials may be treated with a reducing agent, e.g. sodium or potassium hydrosulphite, hypophosphite, thiosulphate or borohydride, before or after treatment with the epihalohydrin or material liberating an epihalohydrin or the reducing agent may be added to the caustic solution. Suitable ephialohydrins and materials liberating epihalohydrins are epichlorohydrin, epibromohydrin, 2, 3-epoxy-2-methyl-1-chloro propane, 2, 3 epoxy-1-chlorobutane, 2, 3 epoxy-1-bromobutane, 2, 3 epoxy-l-chloropentane, 1, 3 dichloro-2-hydroxy propane and 1, 3 dibromo-2-hydroxy propane. The epihalohydrin or material liberating an epihalohydrin may be admixed with a diluent, e.g. water, the preferred vapour mixture being the water and epichlorohydrin constant boiling vapour composition at 87.8 DEG C., at 760 mm having a composition of 76% by weight of epichlorochydrin and 24% by weight of water. The temperature of the vapour may range from the reflux temperature of the epihalohydrin or material liberating the epihalohydrin up to 100 DEG C. in excess thereof and the textile materials may be hung in or passed through a chamber filled by the vapour so that the contact time with the vapour is from 15 seconds to 5 minutes. The textile materials may be washed with water or water and detergents and dried at 20 DEG -125 DEG C.ALSO:Cellulosic textile materials are creaseproofed by treating them in either order with an aqueous caustic solution and with the hot vapour of an epihalohydrin or material which liberates an epihalohydrin when in an alkaline medium. Woven and non woven fabrics threads, gauze, yarn, cord, string or netting comprising cotton, linen or regenerated cellulose fibres alone or in admixture with wool, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene cyanide, polyamide, polyester-polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane, corn protein-formaldehyde polymer, mineral or alginate rayon fibres may be treated. The treated materials may be used for making dresses, drapes, upholsteries, shoes, carpets, coats, shirts or towels.
