Abstract
954,004. Sugar-cane mills. HONOLULU IRON WORKS CO. Feb. 27 ,1963, No. 7919/63. Heading B2A. A sugar-cane mill having a pressure roll 1, Fig. 1, and back-up rolls 2, 3 mounted between transversely-spaced housings 4 and a ram 20 mounted on each of said housings for forcing the pressure roll downwardly towards the rolls 2, 3, includes eccentric means interposed between each ram and the related housing for selectively adjusting the position of the ram laterally relative to the axis of the pressure roll. The pressure roll is vertically adjustable between sliding wear plates 19, each ram 20, which is mounted in a top cap 21 acting on the top wall 22 of the journal box 17, being adjustable laterally or radially so as to maintain an even pressure between the rolls in spite of differences in the resistance to compression of the sugar-cane mat fed between the rolls. The force of the ram is applied through a bracing-block 66 having a spherical interfit with the lower end of the ram. Stops 67 engage abutments in the feet 60 to limit upward movement of the roll 1. Each ram 20 is adjustable by being mounted in an eccentric cylindrical socket 23 in an eccentrically-bored cylinder 24 and rotatably mounting the cylinder in an aperture 27 extending axially through the top cap 21. The eccentric cylinder 24 is adjustably rotatable in its seat 27 by a tool engaging eye bolts 30. Each ram is held locked in its selected position by a locking flange 31, Fig. 5, having a number of spaced holes 32 to receive a bolt 33 screwable into a bolt-hole 34, the set position being indicated by scales 36. Each ram 20 and its eccentric cylinder 24 is removable as a unit without removing the cap from the housing. Pressure fluid is applied to chamber 37, Fig. 4, via a port 38, and to retain the unit in assembled relation during removal, locking plates 39 engage an annular shoulder 40 on the ram. The cylinder and top cap are interlockable by a pair of wings 41, Fig. 5, on diametrically opposite sides of the cylinder, insertable through opposed slots 43. To assemble the ram and cylinder with the top cap 21, Fig. 4, the cylinder is slid into the aperture in the top cap and turned so that the wings 41 underlie the abutment 45. A gasket 46 carried in a groove 47 in the ram seals against leakage of fluid, and is replaceable by retracting the ram sufficiently from its socket to expose the gasket. The top cap 21 is releasably locked to the jaws 53 by providing a channel 54, Fig. 1, opening on to the sides 55 of the housing, and bounded at the sides by spaced walls 56 and grooves 57, each top cap having feet 60 interlocking in the grooves. A pair of screws 64 projecting through lugs 65 on the top cap fix the top cap against transverse movement and tightly engage the confronting surfaces.
