953,702. Voltage comparison circuits; photoelectric measuring devices. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1961 [Aug. 26, 1960], No. 29562/60. Headings G1A and G1U. A unit for the comparison of an unknown voltage with a reference voltage comprises a light source, the luminous output of which provides a measure of the voltage applied to it, a photo transistor responsive to the luminous output, for converting that output into electric current, means for measuring and indicating the said current, and two input terminals and a switch for selecting one of the terminals to apply the voltage at that terminal to the light source. One of the terminals is fed from a circuit arranged to provide an adjustable D.C. voltage, whose value is determined by a potentionieter circuit containing a reference voltage source, and the other terminal is connected in use to the source of the unknown voltage. A low power electric lamp bulb 2 which is connected across the voltage input is enclosed in a light tight box 1. A photo-transistor TX1 is secured to the envelope of the bulb, and connections are made from it so that it forms part of a linear amplifier in one arm of a bridge circuit. A meter M1 is connected across the bridge in such a way as to measure small changes in collector current, the static collector voltage being balanced by a potentiometer P2. A D.C, supply source 5, against which the A.C. input 3 is to be compared, may be switched through the switch S1 to energize the lamp 2, and the voltage of this source is determined using a conventional precision potentiometer P3. It is generally required to set up a driving oscillator to produce an A.C. output voltage of a given r.m.s. value, so the potentiometer P1 is adjusted to give the necessary reading on P3, with the D.C. supply connected into the circuit, and then the position of S1 is changed to connect the oscillator into the measuring circuit and the oscillator output is adjusted to give the same reading on the meter M1. The method is only accurate for A.C. frequencies greater than 2 kc./s.
