Abstract
953,568. Radiant gas burners; grilling stoves. CALORIC APPLIANCE CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1961, No. 29785/61. Headings F4T and F4W. A radiant burner comprises a head 10 having an opening covered by an outer radiating corrugated screen 28 to ensure radiation in different directions, the apices of the corrugations contacting an inner screen 30. The distances between the apices of the corrugations on the opposite sides of the outer screen are greater than the combined thickness of the inner and outer screens. The embodiment shown is suitable for the broiling compartment of a gas cooking stove and includes a further inner screen 26, all the screens 26, 30 and 28 being of dihedral form. The inner screen 30 is of coarse mesh and the further inner and the outer screens are of fine mesh, the three screens being secured in place by a thin strip 36 screwed to the rim 32 of the burner head. The inner screens serve to prevent the temperature in the burner head cavity 12 rising above the flash point of the combustible mixture supplied to the burner. Air and gas are supplied through a mixing chamber 14 of Venturi form to the cavity 12 which is provided with a perforated baffle 20 to aid uniform distribution of the mixture over the screens. The flow capacity of the Venturi is about twice as great as that required for a ported open flame burner of comparable output to ensure an adequate supply of combustion air and the capacity of the cavity 12 is large compared with the flow capacity of the Venturi in order to maintain a relatively low pressure in the burner head to aid the entraining of combustion air when gas is supplied under low pressure. The burner may also be used in the grilling compartment of cooking stove, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), or in a space heater.
