953,490. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. WELDOTRON CORPORATION. June 21, 1962 [April 9, 1962], No. 24009/62. Heading B5K. [Also in Divisions B8 and H5] In a heat sealing apparatus, Fig. 1, for sealing and simultaneously severing superimposed layers 29, 29a of sheet material, e.g. transparent polyethylene, when forming packages, a folded strip of the material is drawn manually from a roll 20 to a position over a tray 36 which is adjustable in height to accommodate articles of varying heights, and a pivoted head 28 carrying pres sure strips 26 is then lowered to press the material against sealing and severing members 44 and 50 and to operate a switch 100 to supply a heating pulse to resistance strips, e.g. of a nickel-chromium alloy steel, carried by the sealing members (see Division H5). The resistance strips are mounted under tension from springs 87 in grooves in insulators 64, e.g. of alumina, which are mounted in grooves 60 in the members 44, 50 e.g. of aluminium, so as to allow longitudinal expansion and contraction of the heat sealing and severing members during and between heating pulses. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5, for sealing circular packages, the sealing members 104 and 106 are semi-circular in shape.
