Abstract

953,356. Photo-electric fluorescence determination. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 24,1960 [Nov. 19, 1959], No. 36445/60. Heading G1A. A fluorescence intensity determining device capable of manufacture in a light and portable form for uranium prospecting, comprises a flash light source 4. The radiation passes through diaphragm 5 and is collimated by lens 6 and passed to filter 7 which absorbs the visible light and transmits the ultra-violet. This filter is mounted in an aperture in the surface of internally polished sphere 8, preferably made of aluminium alloy. Diametrically opposite the filter is a further aperture 9 against which can be presented the sample 10 to be tested. This may be solid or liquid and is mounted in one of a number of depressions in a rotatable disc 11. Fluorescence of the sample gives visible light which passes through filter 12, designed to stop ultra-violet radiations, in another position in the sphere and thence to photo-multiplier detector 13. The electrical output is fed to a resistancecapacitance circuit 15 which integrates the signal for application to galvanometer indicator 16. If uranyl salts are present in the sample the indication is proportional to the concentration of uranium. The power supply may comprise a nickel-cadmium six-volt battery 1 driving a transistor convertor 2 producing three hundred volts for the spark-gap discharger 3 causing the lamp flash and also the high voltage photo-multiplier supply 14.
