Abstract

In an apparatus for determining the extensibility of textile fabrics the fabric is stretched between clamps 3, 9 and the stretching force is applied by a weight 17. As shown in Fig. 1 the weight 17 is connected by cords 11,19 to the clamp 9 which is movable along rods 12 and to a carriage 21 movable along a rod 18. Initially the cord 19 is taut as shown in Fig. 3. The carriage 21 is then pulled along the rod 18, against the action of a dashpot 24, by a handle 130 the force of the weight 17 is gradually transferred to the cord 11 which finally supports the whole weight. Thus the rate of increase of the stretching force can be manually controlled. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the clamp 9 is connected by a cord 37 with the weight 17 and a lead screw 30 rotatably mounted in a fixed nut 32 abuts the clamp 9. In this example the lead screw is turned by a handle 33 gradually transferring the action of the weight 17 to the clamp 9 until the end of the screw is entirely freed from the clamp. In both embodiments the extension of the fabric is read from a scale 7. In a further modification of the apparatus shown in Fig. 4 (Fig. 8, not shown), the nut 32 is formed as a hinged quickly-releasable half-nut spring-urged into engagement with the screw 32. Thus the screw may be moved axially rapidly prior to a test.
