Abstract

952,953. Vehicle doors; vehicle bodies. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. Feb. 7, 1963 March 23, 1962], No. 11151/62. Headings B7B and B7J. [Also in Division F4] A motor-vehicle heater system comprises a hot air duct extending through the hollow interior of a vehicle door. As illustrated, hot air is supplied to fixed ducts 7 in the forward door ports 6 to which the front doors 1 of a four door car are hinged. The ducts 7 are connected to ducts 5 in the hollow front doors by pipes 8 having flexible portions 9 permitting the doors to open without breaking the connection of the ducting. The ducts 5 are secured to the inner panels 2 of the doors near their bottom edges and communicate through apertures 18 with the interior of the doors to demist the sliding side windows 19 and through apertures 21 with the interior of the car. When the front doors are closed the rear ends of the ducts 5 engage by means of oblique seal surfaces with a short duct extending through the posts separating the front and rear doors, Fig. 3 (not shown), which are connected to ducts 12 in the rear doors by flexible pipes. The ducts 12 are similar to the ducts 5 and communicate at the rear edges of the rear doors when the latter are closed with fixed ducts 17 in the car bodywork by means of oblique sealing surfaces. One or both of the ducts 17 is continued rearwardly and inwardly at 22 and terminates in a flared opening 23 below the rear window 24. In a modification (not shown) the front ends of the door ducts 5 and 12 do not have the flexible pipe extension and communicate with the fixed ducts in the body work by means of seals which are pressed together when the doors are closed. The hot air supply for the ducts 5, 7, 12 and 17 comes from a heater 25 including a hot water radiator. Alternatively the heater may be in a position 26 below the scuttle or the radiator may be in a forward position 27. Hot air is also supplied to the windscreen from the heater via ducts 28. The heating system is applicable to a front engined car as illustrated, or to a rear engined car.
