Abstract
952,882. Supplying air to liquid fuel burners. FUEL FIRING Ltd., and C. G. BETTERIDGE. Jan. 2, 1961 [Oct. 2, 1959], No. 33556/59. Heading F4T. In a liquid fuel burner the speed of the combustion air supplied to the burner nozzle is maintained substantially constant by regulating the total orifice area through which air issues at the nozzle in accordance with the volume of air supplied to the burner. As shown in Fig. 4, a rotary damper 31 controls the volume of air supplied through an inlet 30, cones 20, 21 control the entry of secondary air into the annular spaces between air tubes 15, 16, 17, and a primary air adjuster 14 connected to the cone 20 by a rod 18 regulates the aperture of slots 9 in a shroud 12 surrounding an atomizer 11. The cones 20, 21 are mounted on slidable concentric shafts 40, 41 so that when a lever 22 (Fig. 5) engaging a collar 23 on the shaft 40 is displaced manually or by a cam positioner mechanism 25, the shafts are displaced axially until the cone 21 engages the ends of the tubes 16, 17 and air flow therebetween is prevented. Continued movement of the lever 22 compresses a spring 29 and moves the cone 20 into engagement with the tubes 15, 16. Swirler blades 19 are disposed at the outlet ends of the tubes 15, 16, 17 and fuel is supplied to the atomizer 11 through a tube 10. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, shut-off sleeves 60, 61, 62 co-operate with frusto-conical flanges on the tubes 15, 16, 17 to progressively close the annular passages between the tubes. The shut-off sleeves 60, 61, 62 are carried by a spider 80 on a slidable shaft 40 actuated by an electric motor 25, manually, or by an air cylinder. The shaft 40 is linked to a butterfly damper controlling the air inlet 30 and to a fuel valve 82.
