Abstract

952,869. Making drainage pipes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 6, 1961 [Jan. 11, 1960; March 4, 1960], Nos. 1019/60[and 7843/60. Heading F2P. A method of forming a tube from two or more lengths of flexible sheet material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, in the form of strips 38 having integral interlockable tabs 39 and recesses 41 formed along the longitudinal edges thereof, comprises curling the strips about the longitudinal edges thereof in troughed form and joining the curled strips together in side-by-side relationship by introducing the tabs of one edge of one strip into the co-operating recesses of an adjacent edge of another strip to form interlocked longitudinal seams in which the tabs are passed inwardly through the co-operating recesses with respect to the formed tube to lie against the inside surface of the tube. As shown, a vertical feeder conduit 25 and a former tube 26 extending horizontally are mounted behind a mole plough 10 carried by a tractor 14, the conduit carrying reels 32 of continuous strip material which are drawn down the interior of the conduit and around an inclined guide plate 35, rearwardly to the tube 26 and into a die 36, the finished tube then passing through a sleeve 37 and into a tunnel 15 formed by the mole. The die 36 comprises a guide block 43 and a pair of concave sheet metal guide troughs 44, 45, longitudinal slots 46 . . . 49 being formed in diagonally-opposite corners of the block. The slots 47, 48 extend longitudinally parallel to the axis of the block, but the slots 46, 49 extend obliquely to the longitudinal axis so that the pairs of slots 46, 47 and 48, 49 intersect one another. As two strips of material are simultaneously drawn through the die the slots 46, 49 progressively carry the slotted edges of the strips towards the tabbed edges lying in the slots 47, 48 until at the intersections of the slots the tabs 39 of one strip enter the slots 41 of the other strip. The tube thus formed is allowed to expand, due to the resilience of the material, to cylindrical form so that the tabs lie flat against the internal surface of the tube. The die may be modified to form tubes from three strips of material. Specification 851,746 is referred to.
