Abstract

A fabric having a microporous polymeric coating is produced by coating a fabric matrix with a polymeric material from the group consisting of polyacrylonitrile, polybutadiene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyral, polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, chloroprene polymers, copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile or styrene, natural and butyl rubber, which contains a pore-forming agent, mechanically working the coated fabric matrix by passing it between calender rolls, and thereafter removing the pore-forming agent from the polymeric material to render it microporous. The coated fabric may be passed between the calender rolls at least once in one direction and at least once in the opposite direction. The fabric matrix may be woven or unwoven of, for example, cotton, nylon or "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark). The pore-forming agent may be sodium chloride which may be leached from the coating. The coating may contain materials, such as clay, carbon black and silica, which enhance the porosity of the coating. Specification 565,022 is referred to.
