Abstract

952,584. Walking mechanisms. EISENWERK WESERHUTTE A.G. Feb. 5, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 4656/63. Addition to 903,521. Heading B7H. A walking mechanism comprises two sets of three walking legs I, II, III and A. B. C each leg comprising a pair of extensible members connected to a foot-plate by a common universal joint and to a load member 1 at two spaced points, the lines passing through the intersection points of each pair of members with a horizontal plane together forming a hexagon. The connections of the legs with the load member 1, which may be a load supporting member, a load itself or a piece of equipment to be moved and of any desired shape, may be coplanar. The extensible members are preferably hydraulic rams. To move for example in the direction M one set of legs I, II, III is lowered and the other set A, B, C raised (Fig. 4a). Members 3, 7 are then extended and members 2, 6 shortened and preferably also the members 4, 5 of leg II extended to move the load member 1 forward. Then leg A is lowered, members 10, 12 extended to move the legs B, C forwards and downwards, and legs I, II, III raised (Fig. 4, b). Members 10, 12 and 11, 13 of legs B, C are then respectively shortened and extended to move the load member 1 further forward. These processes are repeated to maintain the motion of the load member 1.
