Abstract

Manganese metal is prepared by electrolysis of an acid solution of manganous sulphate using mercury cathode, in which 20-200 g. of ammonium sulphate per litre is added to the electrolyte containing 15 g. per litre or more of MnSO4, and the temperature is maintained at 75 DEG C. or higher. The formation of manganese dioxide is avoided by using an anode of a lead/ tin alloy containing a little cobalt. The acid manganous sulphate electrolyte may be an acid treated manganese ore, in which the acidity is reduced to 10-15 g. per litre. A compound Mn2Hg5 is formed with the mercury which is insoluble in it, and is decomposed above 75 DEG C. to form MnHg which is also insoluble in mercury. The content of Mn in mercury is about 1% and flows readily at the operating temperature. Specification 597,220 is referred to.
