952,321. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. March 21, 1960 [March 21, 1959] No. 9883/59. Headings F2E and F2F. An actuator for a brake of the kind in which friction elements are spread apart into engagement with the rotatable member to be braked is located within the brake and comprises a cylinder closed by a solid wall and mounted adjacent its open end upon a torque taking member to spread means reciprocable along the axis of the cylinder substantially at right angles to the torque taking member, hydraulic fluid operating in the space between the means and a closed end of the cylinder and a pull member for connecting the means to the rigging of a manually operable brake operating member. In the internal shoe-drum brake shown a cylinder 12 is mounted inside the brake back plate 13 between adjacent end shoes 10 with its axis at right angles to the back plate 13, a piston 18 in the cylinder is adapted to be actuated by hydraulic fluid supplied under pressure to a space 19 between the piston and the closed end of the cylinder at its end remote from the back plate, and a wedge 24 is associated with the piston 18 and is movable to separate the shoes upon axial movement of the piston away from the closed end of the cylinder. The wedge 24 is adapted to be connected to the rigging of a hand brake lever or the like so that it is movable to separate the shoes upon hydraulic or manual actuation of the brake. Figs. 1 and 3 show an arrangement wherein the brake shoes may be spread apart either by hydraulic pressure to actuate brake shoes 10 through wedge and roller mechanism 24, 25 to spread apart tappets 15 which slide in opposite bores at right angles to the bore of the cylinder to engage the brake shoes 10. Alternatively the tappets may be spread apart by actuation of a pull rod connection to rigging of the hand brake to actuate the wedge 24 and piston 18. A lost motion connection may be incorporated between the pull rod and the rigging of the hand brake so that the piston may be actuated hydraulically without the hand brake mechanism being disturbed.
