952,107. Deflecting jet streams on aircraft. NORTHROP CORPORATION. May 19, 1961, No. 18436/61. Headings B7G and B7W. [Also in Division G3] An aircraft jet propulsion engine thrust deflector has vanes 23-26 pivotally mounted in members 27, Fig. 6, and rotated by screw-jacks 28, control cables 32 and electrical apparatus (see Division G3). During the initial range of the rotation from a forward thrust position, Fig. 3, to a vertical thrust position, Fig. 2, via a S.T.O.L. position. Fig. 4, not shown, the vane 23 rotates through a greater angle than vane 24, vane 24 through a greater angle than vane 25 &c. and vice versa during the remaining range. The vanes co-operate to define convergentdivergent nozzles, Fig. 3, in the first range and convergent nozzles in the remaining range. Each vane is streamlined with maximum thickness located forward of the mid-section. This differential rotation of the vanes and the angle that members 27 make with the longitudinal axis of the engine, maintain a constant throat area l for each nozzle. The vanes may be moved to a reverse thrust position, Fig. 5, not shown.
