A bobbin holder comprises a spindle-like body 1 in which are housed two elongated legs 10 shaped at their lower ends to provide leg heels 10b. In Fig. 2, the heels 10b are shown biased outwardly from the body 1 by two off-set ramps 8. Surrounding the heels 10b is a heavy frustro-conical collar 9. When a bobbin 12, Fig. 4, is pushed on to the body 1 it raises the collar 9 which interacts with the heels 10b to raise them up the ramps 8 and cause them to retract into the body 1 until eventually the collar 9 is above the heels 10b. The heels 10b then drop under gravity and the ramps 8 bias them outwardly to support the bobbin 1 by engaging under a bobbin shoulder 12b. To remove the bobbin 12 it is pushed right up the body 1 to raise the collar 9 to a position at which it acts on upper leg projections 10a in a manner raising the legs 10 and causing them to swing inwardly until a toe 10d on each leg has been raised up its associated ramp 8 and on to a retaining ledge 8b associated with each ramp. The bobbin holder is then in the condition illustrated in Fig. 5 and the bobbin can be withdrawn from the body 1. As a bobbin is withdrawn the collar 9 drops under its own weight and collar abutments 9a, Fig. 3, (not shown), in passing, push the toes 10d off the retaining ledges 8b by engaging with humps 10c opposite the bobbin-retaining heels 10b. The bobbin holder is then, once again, as in Fig. 2.
