951,864. Sanitary and hygienic devices; substation circuits. B. KOOP. July 3, 1962, No. 25392/62. Headings H4J and H4K. A telephone handset has an electric sterilizing lamp built into the mouthpiece. As shown, Fig. 1, the handset 12, 26, 27 has a ring-shaped ultra-violet lamp 10, with contact pins projecting at right-angles to its plane, mounted in a groove round the mouthpiece 12 which is provided with sockets to receive the contact pins of the lamp. The handset is provided with a switch 21 which is closed when the handset is hung on the arm 25. This switch 21 initiates the operation of a time switch which applies current from the line to the lamp for a predetermined period. When the handset is removed from its rest the time-switch is reset. As shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 the ultraviolet radiation sterilizes the handle 26 and the earpiece 27 as well as the mouthpiece 12. The handset may be used with a desk type stand by mounting the switch 21 in the centre of the handle and providing a stud on the stand so that the switch is operated when the handset is cradled on the base, Fig. 3 (not shown). In either embodiment the switch may be operated by hand if required.
