951,631. Making honeycomb materials; winding and reeling. DUFAYLITE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. March 18, 1960 [Dec. 19, 1958], No. 41185/58. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Divisions B5, D1 and D2] Unexpanded structural honeycomb material is made by winding two or more webs, of which at least one is tensioned, one upon the other, around a rotary former and applying an adhesive to the webs or some of them before they have reached the former or while they are on it but still have one side exposed so that the layers accumulated on the former have the adhesive arranged in parallel bands on their two sides, the bands on one side being staggered in relation to those on the other. The webs may be of metal foil. As shown a web 102 is wound on a hexagonal platen 150 after being printed with bands of adhesive by printing rollers 120 and 122, together with a web 104 tensioned by passage between the rollers 151. When the material has been wound to the required thickness, it is removed from the platen by cutting it at the bends using circular saw 153, mounted to travel parallel with the axle of the platen, the platen being grooved at its corners to enable the material to be cut right through. One or more belts 156, tensioned by idler rollers 158 applies pressure to the material on the platen. In other embodiments: (1) the former is a cylindrical drum; (2) the former is a flat platen with two planar faces, and when a sufficient thickness of material has accumulated is placed in a press to consolidate the layers, after which the bend portions are sliced off in a guillotine; (3) the faces of the former are slightly curved to assist tensioning; (4) the former has three or four sides and as many webs are wound on symmetrically; (5) more than two webs are used and are of different materials or have different band patterns to produce, when expanded, cells of different sizes; (6) the adhesive bands are applied across the machine direction while the material is exposed on the former by means of two mechanically synchronized printing devices at different stations around the former, one printing band staggered in relation to those printed by the other; (7) the webs are laminated together before being wound on to the former; (8) the web material is fed via loops to compensate for the intermittent winding action when the platen has uniform angular velocity; and (9) the platen is driven with non-uniform angular velocity to give a uniform winding action. When the webs are of metal foil, the adhesive may be a thermosetting material applied in solution and dried to the solid but curable state before winding. A drying chamber for this purpose may be incorporated between the adhesive-applying rollers and the former. The former may be heated to cure the adhesive, or the layers may be temporarily secured by stapling.
