Abstract

951,119. Resistance heating films. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 6, 1961 [Feb. 8, 1960], No. 4371/61. Heading H5H. A heating element for a hot plate or oven has a resistive film bonded to an insulating base, the film including superimposed layers of gold and platinum in direct contact with one another: the platinum prevents degeneration of the gold layer arising from grain growth and agglomeration. A base layer of platinum 40, Fig. 4, and superimposed layer of gold 41 are bonded to the underside of a silica plate 11 in a spiralled serpentine pattern (Fig. 1, not shown) to form a hot plate 11, Fig. 2, held within a ring 16 and reflector 17, the complete structure being mounted on a pivot 26 by member 20 and a plate 21, which is attached to ring 16 and on which is mounted a phenolic resin terminal block 30. A tongue 33 of the plate 11 projects down between plate 21 and block 30, three spring blade silvered contacts 35 contacting each end and the mid-point of the resistive film. Lamp 45, mounted beneath a tube 46, illuminates the centre of the hot plate. The insulating base 11 may alternatively be of ceramic, and the addition of rhodium to the resistive film is referred to.
