In an electromagnetic friction clutch and/or brake, one or more armature discs 4, 4a of magnetic material coated on the face nearest the electromagnet with a film of diamagnetic lubricating substance is or are freely mounted on spigots 5 of a non-magnetic metal or plastic disc 6 fast with an output shaft 6a. In a clutchbrake combination, as shown, the disc 6 carries two sets of armature discs 4, 4a respectively adjacent an electromagnet 2 fast for rotation with an input shaft 1 and a fixed electromagnet 7. In Fig. 3 (not shown) an electromagnetic clutch comprises an output mounted disc carrying a single set of armature discs and a plate fast with the input shaft, having inner and outer pole rings separated by a ring of non- magnetic material, interposed between the armature discs and a stationary electromagnet. Apertures may be provided in the input carried plate to improve cooling. The film of lubricating material may be molybdenum desulphide or a combination of silver and molybdenum disulphide. The armature discs 4, 4a may be made of sintered or conglomerated iron or alloy. Flat, leaf, spiral or other shaped springs may be interposed between the disc 6 and armature discs 4, 4a to maintain the latter parallel to the electromagnets.
