Abstract

A wood preserving composition comprises a solution of a preservative in a liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon medium, which boils below the boiling point of water and is gaseous at the impregnating temperature and atmospheric pressure but liquefiable under elevated pressure, and a co-solvent which dissolves the preservative and with which the liquefied hydrocarbon is miscible. The preservative protects the wood against attack from fungus or termites and may be pentachlorophenol, betanaphthol, tetrachlorophenol, ortho-chlorophenol, chlorinated beta-naphthol or copper naphthenate. The hydrocarbon medium may be a liquefied petroleum gas, propane, butane or pentane or mixtures thereof. Suitable co-solvents are methyl alcohol, toluene, benzene, acetone and polyhydric alcohols. Other materials may be added such as water repellants, e.g. paraffins, silicones or linseed oil, or dyes. The wood is first subjected to reduced pressure then immersed in the solution, if desired after first pressuring the wood with an inert gas according to whether a full cell or empty cell process is preferred. The solution is heated to produce the necessary pressure to impregnate the wood then the solution is drained off, vapours pumped off and the pressure reduced. Due to residual heat in the wood all the hydrocarbon vaporizes and is removed leaving the preservative. The impregnating conditions may be up to 200 DEG F. and 200 p.s.i.g.
