Abstract

In a machine for coating paper or like sheets with liquid varnish, lacquer or like rapid-drying coating materials, in which the coating-applying roller is arranged to be rotated in a reverse surface direction relative to that of the backing cylinder, said applying roller is constructed with at least a metal surface made smooth by grinding, polishing or other suitable treatment and arranged to be pressed against a resilient surface on the backing cylinder. The preferred metal for the applying roller is cast iron; the roller may alternatively comprise another metal with a sprayed coating of stainless steel. A doctor roller may be included in the appratus, having a rubber or polyurethane surface. Specifications 852,489 and 894,017 are referred to.
