Abstract
950,755. Switches held. set and freed mechanically. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. April 14, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 13521/61. Heading H2B. A manually operable step-by-step switch comprises two coaxial rings 3, 9, rotatable separately and urged by springs 4, 10, to a neutral position, ring 3 having spaced notches along its outer periphery, a neutral notch N being empty and the other notches (in the preferred embodiment) containing contacts 5 engageable by a spring latching member 7, which is also a contact member, slidable in the switch casing (not shown), a handle 15 operating a switch actuator member 11 pivoted to ring 9, actuator 11 having projections 38 for engaging said notches, movement of the handle unlatching member 7 from its notch and causing a projection 38 to engage a notch of ring 3 and step rings 3, 9 together round one notch until member 7 latches in the notch adjacent its initial notch, ring 9 returning to the neutral position when handle 15 is released. Conducting pins 22, 23, insulatingly fixed in ring 9, project through elongated apertures 34, 35 of actuator 11 to form alternative pivotal points for the actuator, which has a conducting bar 12 bearing upon both pins in the neutral position. When handle 15 is moved, the actuator pivots about one pin 23, say, and bar 12 engages a shoulder 43 on contact 7 to unlatch it before the rings are stepped round a notch with further movement of the handle, ring 9 being moved when the other pin 22 engages the edge of aperture 34 of the actuator. A spring 14 ensures the return of the handle 15 and actuator 11 to the neutral position. An indexing blade (not shown) attached to ring 3 acts as a position indicator, and operation of this blade upon failure of the actuator mechanism unlatches contact 7 in an emergency. The step-by-step mechanism is by-passed by pulling handle 15 radially outwardly to unlatch contact 7 from its notch, whereupon spring 4 returns ring 3 immediately to its neutral position. A resistance (not shown) is connected across pins 22, 23, so as to be short-circuited by bar 12 in the neutral position but included in the energizing circuit during the stepping operation (Fig. 14, not shown). The switch casing is in two halves and is mountable on the steering column of a vehicle, the switch controlling the gears of the vehicle (Figs. 1, 2, not shown).
