Abstract
950,585. Amplitude modulating systems. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 13, 1960 [May 15, 1959], No. 16786/59. Heading H4L. A single sideband modulated wave sin (#c+#m).t is derived as the sum of two products (sin #c.cos #mt) and (cos #c.t sin # m t) from Hall plate multipliers each having a semi-conductor plate between two ferrite members. To this the carrier sin #c.t is applied to the semiconductor plate of one Hall modulator M2 and to the magnetic field coil of the other modulator Ml so that it is applied in relative phase quadrature to both modulators. Further, the modulation sin # mt is directly applied to the plate of the modulator M1 and through a 90 degrees phase shifter to the magnetic field coil of the other modulator, an amplifier A also ensuring the current through the coil impedance being constant for all frequencies in the modulation range. As shown, the outputs may be added by a transformer and applied to class B amplifiers before transmission. The 90 degrees phase shifter may comprise two cathode followers with inputs in opposite phase and each output energizing, through a capacitor and an inductor respectively a common resistance.
