Abstract

A magnetic storage element is made by electro-depositing copper as a fine grain random orientated coating on phosphor-bronze or beryllium copper substrate, preferably in the form of wire, and plating a ferromagnetic coating on the copper, preferably Fe/Ni alloy having a square hysteresis loop. The wire 2-50 mils thick is preferably cathodically etched in alkali solution, treated with acid and washed before plating in an acid copper sulphate bath at 227 A.S.F. for one minute. The grain size of copper so plated is 0.1-1 m . A plating bath containing FeCl3, NiCl2, ammonium chloride and citrate, and a trace of ammonium hepta molybdate is used at pH 8.6, temperature 90 DEG C. Twistor type devices may be made, when the wire is drawn continuously at constant speed and minimum tension, and centrally disposed in a helical anode of molybdenum wire.
